Book of Eli
“What we have here is failure to communicate.” Captain (the great Strother Martin), after he whacked Cool Hand Luke (if you don’t know that’s Paul Newman, I can’t help you…but I digress). And so at the Quest Training Facility in my former home, yes, East Rutherford, we had the 2017 NY pigskin version of this iconic scene. But rather than Captain berating Luke, it was the tsunami of public opinion pummeling the proud Giants hierarchy…HC….GM…and the most surprising of all, the Owner.
It is almost unfathomable that the Giants, considered one of the elite organizations professional sports, could so misread this situation and bring on a PR nightmare usually reserved for a number of their franchise colleagues in the metropolitan area. And I speak from experience! This was Plaxico…self- inflicted…except not in a nightclub…but in full view of the media…the fans…and the entire team.

The dynamic of public discourse for pro teams starts at the bottom of the food chain, but the information and direction flows one way…downhill. The head coach, or the manager, is the daily face of the team, talking to the media on call and as required by the rules of the sport. Three times a day, two times a day, three times a week, the man on the sidelines or the dugout is the public face of the team. The GM steps in when needed, usually a crisis of some type that needs the higher pay grade to sort things out. And the owner? Unless you’re Cuban, or Jerry Jones, or Mario Lemieux…the less seen or heard, the better. That’s why they pay the head coach and the general manager. A lot.
So we had tweets…and columns….and rants (If this was Big Mike’s exit interview resume…you could feel the spittle thru the radio…Dog probably had one also…but how would you know)? And that was after the Big Mac-adoo (did he buy or rent in Jersey) had begun the mess that wouldn’t end. And then the GM co-signed. The noise was so loud the hideous slide on the side of Route 3 started to shake! And the next day…the Owner spoke. And then you saw the root cause, the accidental shooting, the incidental contact. This was Joltin’ Joe not going to the replay!!! Why????
This was not a layup. This was hard…always is when you confront the reality of your star on the downside. Owner….to GM…to HC. Do we have a plan here? Have we thought this out? Did we examine all the pros and cons? What’s the best -case scenario? Oh yeah…by the way…what’s the worst- case scenario? Hint…we saw it.
But there’s always a silver lining. I now have a great case study of what not to do for my PR class next semester!

Tiger. To be back…it’s all about the back. Against the young bucks. Fantasy golf, anyone?
Yankees closed interviews without inviting in ARod. Too bad…JLo could have choreographed the grounds crew for a new YMCA.
Just a thought…when they jettisoned the 10-year manager from the South Bronx, were these the six names Cash had written on his legal pad?
I personally would have hired Cone to manage and Paulie to be the bench coach.
