Mets GM Sandy Alderson was holding court with a few of us between Fields 4 & 7 in the Mets spring training complex the other day. One of his comments was, “I think we are all going to be impressed with Dominic Smith this spring.”
Dominic arrived in camp more than a week earlier than expected. His new physique has been all the buzz. No, he did not spend the off season with Noah Syndergaard. He went home to California and asked himself, “How can I improve on my poor performance from last year?” He, along with others, was not happy with his stat line in 167 at bats with the Mets last season: .198 average, 9 HRs , 26 RBIs. Smith felt he was better than that and that he failed to make the most of his late season call up.
The first thing he did was change his diet. No more cheeseburgers, pizza and Mexican food. Eliminated the grease and salt. He lost around 30 pounds. Now, nothing but healthy food and small portions. Sounds like something I should try along with some of my pals!
What I have also noticed that he is always smiling and laughing. The guys around him are doing the same. He is at the batting cage kidding around with Brandon Nimmo, he’s in the outfield shagging fly balls with Michael Conforto and they are laughing up a storm.
Laughing and winning have something in common, they are contagious. I like the combination and it might be a good one for the 2018 Mets.
I will be rooting for Dominic to win the starting first base job over Adrian Gonzalez. He has lost the weight and, at the same time, it seems like he has gained some maturity.
“I definitely think it’s going to be an exciting spring training, a new clubhouse dynamic, just a new everything, a fresh start for everybody. So I am pretty excited what I can learn from A-Gon, from everybody”, said Smith.
It might be a little early to call Dominic a team leader but my bet is he is only a year or so away. Let’s go D-Smith! Put that new body to work. I am in your corner along with a handful of the guys over at the PGA Golf Club clubhouse.
