I am feeling strongly that both the Mets and Yankees will left the spirits of the tri-state area sports enthusiasts who have struggled with plenty of losing going back to the start of the NFL season in September.
The Giants were predicted to make the playoffs and they fell flat on their faces with three wins and the Jets could not get out of their own way but somehow ended up with five wins.
This basketball season with the Knicks, St. John’s and the Nets was a real joke. If was not for Seton Hall and my buddy’s Ramapo (NY.) High School boys team, I would have had no interest in hoops at all.
To top it off, how about the Rangers and Islanders battling for last place in their division this year? When are Ranger fans going to wake up and realize that your team is always better on paper than on the ice?
That leaves us with radio play by play guy Matt Loughlin’s Devils who have gone from one of the worst teams last year to actually battling for a playoff spot as we go into the last week of the season. Matt knows that I am not a hockey guy but, hey, I have to jump on some winning team’s band wagon…Go Devils!
Yankee fans, let’s be careful and not assume the Bombers are going to end up in the Canyon of Heroes. Let’s not make the same mistakes the Giants and Rangers did. Baseball seasons are marathons and that is part of the thrill and excitement of the game. Let’s go out and win 95 games on the field.
A lot has to break right for the Mets but I think this might be their year. I think Mickey Callaway is going to turn out to be a good hire. Jacob deGrom is going to be in contention for the NL Cy Young award thanks to working with Callaway and pitching coach Dave Eiland. And how about Matt Harvey and Noah Syndergaard sharing NL Comeback Players of the Year Awards?
Don’t be surprised come the July trade deadline if both the Yanks and Mets are in the market to shore up their playoff hopes. The Mets looking for another big bat and the Yanks looking for another starting pitcher.
Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton have received plenty of press. They have been compared to legends Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris. Sure they deserve it, but the guy I am hoping has a great year is from Grants Pass, Oregon. This guy talks hitting everyday with his father, watches as much video as he can of yesterday’s and today’s greats and is driven to win championships. Third baseman Brandon Drury, one of the new guys, is going to remind fans of Graig Nettles and is quickly going to make you forget about Chase Headley.
New York City is a baseball town. This area loves baseball, it is the number one sport and do not let anyone tell you otherwise. The 2015 Mets were the talk of the town going to the World Series and last year the Yankees were a Game 7 away from the Fall Classic.
Local sports fans have endured plenty of losing of late and have had to battle with four nor’easters this winter so we definitely deserve a special baseball season in 2018. There is nothing better around here when both the Yankees and Mets are playing winning baseball.
