It has been a very rough week for Kevin Willard’s Seton Hall team, not to mention Pirates’ fans. They have suffered three straight conference losses, and their upcoming schedule does not look very favorable for the suddenly reeling squad. First up is a Valentines Day “date” in Cincinnati with #5 Xavier, which will certainly not be a love-in under the boards I assure you. DePaul at The Rock follows on the 18th, before road trips to Providence (21st) and suddenly smoking hot St. John’s (24th). I mean who wants to play the Red Storm right now? Shamorie Ponds is the playing like, well, Chris Mullin (44 points Saturday against Marquette) and they are hardly a pushover anymore. The Pirates close the ledger out with home games against Villanova and Butler. Three home games and three on the road. At the moment SHU is 17-8 and just 6-6 in the Big East Conference.
As a die hard fan of the program, I am at a loss for words at the direction the season is heading as we get closer to March. This team has too much talent, strength, and senior led experience to fall apart at this time of year. The last two losses in particular have been disappointing, at home to Marquette, and Saturday at Georgetown. I’ll bet Pirates fans have Hoya paranoia after that unbelievable game yesterday. SHU rallied from a 17 point second half deficit to take its only lead of the game, 69-67 with just over five minutes remaining. It was all for naught however when Marcus Derrickson nailed the game winning “3” with 4.2 seconds left. That loss will definitely leave a mark! Keep in mind that the Golden Eagles and Hoyas are below Seton Hall in the conference standings.
Let’s not forget that the Pirates were ranked as high as #13 in the country earlier this season. Sadly, it was short lived and the team is clearly not playing as it did to start the season. For some reason, they do not seem to have the same energy and or passion to WIN games! Mind you, this is the Core 4’s (Khadeen Carrington, Angel Delgado, Desi Rodriguez and Ismael Sanogo) last year together. They were the group that was thought to be special before the season started, one more than capable of winning the Big East, and making a run in the NCAA tournament. Well, at the moment, with them continuously losing games that matter, it is just not the case.
What is clear is that Kevin Willard and his staff need to make some changes, and fast. There is no more room for error, they need to get things together in a hurry! I’ve seen them do it as a group on many occasions, I know what they are capable of when clicking on all cylinders. It is time to prove the doubters wrong. Believe me, as disappointed as I am with how they are playing right now, I’m still hopeful they will make a turn around. Only time will tell however if the Pirates’ ship is sinking.
As referenced earlier, their next game is Wednesday (Valentines Day) at 9pm. I suggest everyone make their dinner reservations for early in the evening, as the team needs all of your support in this very crucial game!
