How can’t you love this time of year? The passion…the raw emotion…the living and dying with a single move…the food…the drink…the money line…the fear…Bama/Clemson? Bears/Philly? Luck…Dak…Ole Man Rivers? Of course not! I’m talkin’ ‘The Sopranos’ marathon on HBO, celebrating the 20th anniversary of iconic cable TV. Tony, Carmela, Paulie, Silvio, Christopher …how can you turn away? During the critical moments of the pigskin battle in Jerry’s World between Dallas and Seattle…Tony and Christopher were chopping up Ralph and putting his head in the bowling bag! And if we needed reminding…did anyone in the history of TV ever get pissed faster than Tony? ‘Gone in 60 Seconds’? How about 5?
And if Tony was still ambling down the driveway for his daily delivery of the Star-Ledger, there was a lot going on in Jersey this week. Florham Park to be specific. You want the back page (talking tabloids, not the Ledger)…Gang Green, step right up. Talk radio was doing what talk radio does…take the topic of the day and just beat it to a pulp…with a little help from the listeners. Which brings me to one of my favorite Rod Thorn-In Rod We Trust-HOF Rod stories. Following a radio interview, as we leave the area (I’m Joe Friday here-except the names haven’t been changed, just omitted, to protect the innocent) Rod turns to me and says, as only Rod could, “That guy actually believes his own crap.” Fans, and hosts and the ever growing multitude of those doing media work, online, offline, crossing the line, really have no idea what is taking place behind the scenes. By the people who make their living in the sports world, not talking or writing about the sports world. And one can certainly have an informed opinion. But as Sandy Alderson once said, “If you start listening to the fans, you’ll become one.”
Give (Gase) A Chance!
You will thank me for this-think Mickey and Willie
McConaughey and Woody set the bar pretty high in the first season of ‘True Detective’. I’m expecting big things from Mahershala Ali starting Sunday.
Rutgers beat Ohio State on Wednesday…in hoops. Can you imagine if that was on a fall Saturday afternoon? Still a great win.
The tennis season officially begins this weekend Down Under. Disregard that the best matches are at 3 a.m., and enjoy the summer!
If Manny does not find his way up the Deegan…does the Cash-Machine have a Bryce withdrawal?
