“Barzini is dead. So is Phillip Tattaglia. Moe Greene. Stracci. Cuneo. Today I settled all family business.” What? How did Michael Corleone make his way to the top of this posting? Is there another ‘Godfather’ marathon on AMC? Stay silent, my flock. We have plenty of time for that holiday ritual. No, today, we discuss what has become another yearly occurrence for the national sports psyche. Black Friday, Cyber Monday, those are for the shoppers. For the pigskin loyalists…. they own Black Monday.

Pagano. Gone. Caldwell. Gone. Arias. Retired…but gone. Del Rio. Gone ( Btw…where was the dignity for a coach who took you to the playoffs the prior year…informing him of his dismissal immediately after the game BEFORE he had a chance to address his team…I was front and center for several of these…Cal’s infamous ‘perp walk’ in Miami, coined by @Ian_OConnor, the B. Scott dismissal after two Finals appearances, when In Rod We Trust wore one of his finer black suits in a over-crowded Champion Center press room, L. Frank, etc, etc… there is a right way, and a classless way….it’s not that difficult…but I digress).
Each sport cascades thru their respective campaigns to their own particular rhythms and beats, with demanding schedules taking their tolls on players and coaches alike, testing their physical and mental makeup. And for the majority in the professional ranks, it’s immediate gratification…if the season is careening out of control, cut off the head of the snake. Except in the NFL, which for coaches means ‘Not For Long’. In the league that protects The Shield, there seems to be little incentive to make a change (unless of course you bench your quarterback who has started more than 200 games in a row for a player who was let go by the Jets…but I digress). And so, just wait till the end. Actually, the day after the end.
But even with the hammer of Black Monday in typical form, what about the head men who survived? Cleveland, Tampa, Cincy…for those coaches, they were singing a different tune last week. Probably a little The Mama and the Pappas.
Anyone seen Fredo?

I hope that the NHL gave the guy who came up with the Winter Classic a lifetime credential and parking pass.
They re-shot all of Spacey’s scenes in ‘All the Money in the World’ with Christopher Plummer- both Plummer and the editor deserve an award.
Those big-boy pants that new GM Gettleman talked about at his press conference? …may need a couple pair!
