Seton Hall Head Coach Kevin Willard was one happy man on Saturday night, and he wasn’t the only one. Pirates fans were able to witness a much-needed, 63-58 win over a tough Creighton Blue Jay Team.
With it, they are now in a 4-way tie for third place in the Big East at 5-6 (14-9 overall). The win not only helps the Pirates in conference, it also keeps their hopes of an NCAA Tournament bid alive. Willard and his team have now won two of their last Big East games and seem to have nice momentum shifting their way.
The Pirates found themselves down six points late in the second half due to a staggering 22-5 Creighton run. That is when Willard turned to his best player, Myles Powell to take over and seal the deal for the The Hall. He turned to his star guard during the under 4 minute television timeout and said, “This is what you live for, this is your time.”
Powell answered his coach in a big way, putting the team on his back and displaying a dominant performance. He scored 13 of his team’s final 15 points and knocked down all nine of his free throws. This is what star players do for their team when they’re down. The junior finished with 22 points and 7 rebounds, but his poise and dominance down the stretch is what stood out the most.
Here are some of my takeaways from sitting courtside:
*Quincy Mcknight is the Pirates second best player. He is a lockdown defender and is needed on the floor in crunch time. He just needs to commit less turnovers and fouls that keep him out of the game.
*Sandro Mamukelashvili finished with 10 rebounds. This is the type of play Willard expects from his sophomore big man.
*The Pirates played well for the most part defensively, holding Creighton’s offense to 30.3% from the field and 28.6% from 3pt. An area they need to improve on though is limiting the number of offensive rebounds their opponents get. Creighton finished with 16, an that’s not acceptable to allow anyone that many second chance opportunities.
*Creighton’s Martin Krampelj is someone the Pirates need to focus on when they travel to Omaha, NE on February 17 for the rematch. He finished with 25 points and 11 rebounds.
*Overall, this was a great win for Seton Hall and was very much needed. The Pirates face a tough Georgetown team Wednesday night at the Rock.
