Rutgers’ best chance for a national champion came up short at the nationals in St. Louis.
Three time All American, Anthony Ashnault lost in the semis to defending national champion, Dean Heil from Oklahoma State, 4-2. Ashnault lost last year at nationals to the eventual champ as well.
The match was even closer this year and an upset minded Ashnault showed some heart. Down 3-0, he earned a takedown at the beginning of the third period but Heil was able to escape and ride out the clock. The battle tested Heil is the defending champ for a reason and at this point, was just one move better.
Ashnault still has a chance to better his 4th place place finish at last year’s nationals. He needs to win in the consolation semis for a chance at 3rd. Heil will defend his 141 lb championship against long time rival and fellow Virginian, George DiCamillio.
