Rutgers welcomed the 7th ranked team in the country to the RAC Tuesday night but a sloppy start by the Scarlet Knights and hot shooting early by Michigan put Rutgers in a early hole which was too much to overcome. Give RU credit for battling. They went on a late run in the first half to cut the lead to 12. In the second half they cut the lead to single digits but just did not have enough against an excellent Wolverine team with players who can hit from all over the court. Including Ignas Brazdeikis who scored 23 points and hit the bottom of the net every time he touched the ball. And that’s the story, A team that can hit 3’s like Michigan gives Rutgers fits and it showed again tonight.
Now let’s be real, Michigan went to the final last year and could very well this year. If not for the sloppy start by RU, where a bunch of chances inside did not go in the basket, this could have been anyone’s game. Eugene Omoruyi was strong inside with 21 points, though he did miss a few give me’s. But Geo Baker struggled and when that happens it’s usually a tough night for Rutgers.
No point in hanging on to this one. This game was not considered one Rutgers was going to get. At least they played hard and made it interesting in the second half. On to Illinois, who just upset Michigan State and has been playing well as of late. And that’s the BIG 10 for you. You just don’t get a break in this league.
