You can’t make this up. Not only is St. Peter’s the first 15th seed to make the Elite 8, but they did it on National Peacock day. Yes, there is such a thing.
Riding stellar guard play from Daryl Banks III, Matthew Lee. and Doug Edert, the Peacocks continued their amazing run with an upset of #3 seed Purdue. TBS analyst, Kenny Smith made two important points in his postgame analysis. No team’s guards are playing better and they’re dictating the tempo of the game. That tempo absolutely frustrated Purdue and took them out of their game. Purdue star Jaden Ivey, considered a top 5 pick in this year’s NBA draft, struggled to get into a rhythm. Purdue’s big men Zach Edey and Trevion Williams had success early but played tight in the second half as St. Peter’s pulled away late.
Up next, St Peter’s takes on another college basketball blue blood, #8 North Carolina in Philadelphia Sunday afternoon for a chance to go to the Final 4. After taking down a #2 and #3 seed the Peacocks are playing with the confidence of a top seed. How big is this? As TBS analyst Charles Barkley put it, If St Peter’s makes the Final 4 it would be one of the best sports stories of all time. Agreed Charles!
