Don’t ya’ know….Bobby Bo?
I’m not an expert on much of anything, but I did get a doctorate in bad hoops and over-the hill players back in the day when the Swamp was never really rocking and the upper bowl resembled the Garden State Plaza on Any Given Sunday (Pacino likes to play gangsters and football coaches…amongst other magic moments in cinema…but I digress). Bernard, Mo Cheeks, Vern Fleming, Reggie Williams…all clanged jumpers off Route 3 at the end, collected their money…and left the fans wondering, “Why are we signing these guys”?
So when I read that Brodie from Citi is about to deal for Robbie Cano (along with a stud closer), thoughts of dead legs past crept into my imagination. Robbie, at 36, off the PED 80-game smackdown, owed many times more the nine mill from ‘The Match’ (more on that later) and has a contract that runs for five more years!! Somewhere, Bobby Bo, who may have signed the second best deal behind the Silna brothers (Google search…owned Spirit of St. Louis…absorbed by the NBA…TV money in perpetuity…do some research!!!) is shaking his head, or nodding his head…or just slapping himself silly. Except….this may be different.
Now remember, this is the Mets we’re discussing. And discussing hard, like in Hot Stove League Yankees hard. Like this is something coming out of the Steinbrenner’s from Cleveland playbook. Aggressive play for an aging star…and a closer, who can make the rotation whole, and salary relief which lowers the angst level, etc. etc. This is Brodie riding into town and telling the downtrodden faithful of the Blue and Orange (Knicks or Mets…I forget sometimes) that there is a new sheriff in town…and the management team of W, W and K (never leave out Saul Katz) are allowing him to shop in midtown during the Holidays…not at the mall!
And it’s not just the on –the- field play. Convinced a top exec with the Bosox to join him over the Whitestone Bridge. Hired an analytics guy. Put a former manager on the bench to assist his guy Mickey…not really his guy, but at least he’s giving him some needed support. If you pay for seats in Queens, how can you not love what you are seeing?
Don’t worry about the Cano contract. Brodie helped write it. Robbie will get his money, but in a way that his former agent can live with. And considering all the action in November, you get the feeling that the out-of-the box hire will take his time in trying to hit it out of the park this off-season in one swing. But you can just imagine the late night call from Hal to Cash.
“Sorry for the late ring, Cash. It’s Hal. Just read about some stuff over in Queens. No worries here. I know it’s only 4:00 am, but maybe by 8:00 you can text me how we are doing on Harper, Manny, Ruth and Gehrig?”
Ronnie Torreyes…played 10 positions, had clutch hits, fielded well…and founded the Toe Cam. That alone should have guaranteed him a tenured spot.
I said this at the time…Broadway Baker would have played very well in the Big Yapple.
The Buffalo Sabres…New York’s hockey team!!!!
What station do we think Eli listens to driving home?
I waited till this weekend to watch ‘The Match’ for free…which it seems I could have done last week. I sense one and done.
